A nonvenomous species of snake native to North America, the rough green snake is sometimes colloquially referred to as the grass snake. It is remarkably docile and its bite, although rare, is harmless. Despite its calm personality, it is not commonly owned as a pet.
Because it is both common and widespread throughout its endemicrange, the rough green snake is classified as a species of leastconcern by the IUCN. However, they are negatively affected by bothpesticides and urban development. More specifically, theconstruction of roads in the rough green snake's natural habitatfragments its population and also puts them at danger when they areforced to cross.
